Artist’s Statement
“There are two ways of spreading light. To be the candle, or the mirror that reflects it.” – Edith Wharton.
Throughout my life I have struggled with my role as a modern-women trying to find my own path, my own identity. Growing up in the traditions of the southern heritage has brought many challenges of preserving the past while trying to “spread my wings” and create a new identity of the “female-self” within the constraints of that culture.
I have watched my mom, my grandmother and my aunts overcome extreme obstacles and exhibit extraordinary strength in their time of deep despair and challenges. I too have been through a great deal of heartache and it is through the lens that I would like to pay tribute to iconic women who have transcended time through the artist’s eye. Songs, poems, books, and ballads, have captured the essence of the female spirit’s ability to survive and inspire.
Because of my love for fairy-tales and poetry, I have selected iconic images of women from our past who have influenced me and inspired me as a child. I have selected famous characters in literature and in paintings to tell the story of modern women’s plight to survive while shedding light on the “female psyche.” These photographs pay homage to the past while preserving the present challenges of the female spirit and how the challenges of the past still pertain today for the role of women in today’s culture. These characters have played an important role in my personal journey to discover my creative voice.
It is important to me to showcase women in nature surrounded by trees and water; mother earth, a return to nature, where I can find our inner voice, the spirit guide. Many of the images will pay homage to such famous iconic women such as, “The Lady of Shalott,” “Ophelia,” “Titania,” “The Lady of The Lake,” “Venus de Milo,” and “The Bathing Girl.”
It is my goal to portray the inner psyche of the female mind through the expressive poetry of the lens.
